Coachella 2012 Lineup Announced!

As you can tell by the poster above, the 2012 Coachella lineup has been announced and it just might be the festival to beat this year! In my opinion, Sunday looks to be the best day, followed by Friday, with the Saturday headliners seeming to be kind of meh, but the lower ranked bands are pretty good. One notable omission is the reunited Stone Roses though. Why aren’t they headlining?

Here are my picks for each day (and feel free to post your picks):

Friday: The Black Keys, Pulp, Refused, Afrojack, Explosions in the Sky, M83, Girls, Frank Ocean, Yuck, Neon Indian, The Black Angels, Atari Teenage Riot

Saturday: The Shins, Miike Snow, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, St. Vincent, Kasabian, Buzzcocks, Destroyer, tUnE-yArDs, Black Lips, Grouplove, Keep Shelley in Athens

Sunday: Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, At The Drive-In, Justice, La Roux, DJ Shadow, Wild Flag, Gotye, Fitz and the Tantrums, Real Estate, Lissie, Metronomy

If you feel like staying in Indio a bit longer, you can re-live the weekend a week later from 04/20 to 4/22, when they do it all over again.

Now if only I could figure out the logistics of how to get there and where to stay if I do end up going at the last minute!

At The Drive-In Reunite!

The most epic piece of music news was announced yesterday with the following tweet:

“¡ ATTENTION ! To whom it may concern: AT THE DRIVE-IN will be breaking their 11 year silence THIS STATION IS …NOW…OPERATIONAL”

90′s post-hardcore band At The Drive-In are reuniting!!

The last time At The Drive-In played together as a band was in February of 2001. Members Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez went on to form The Mars Volta, while Jim Ward, Paul Hinojos, and Tony Hajjar formed the band Sparta. I never got a chance to see Sparta, but I can say that The Mars Volta put on some of the trippiest shows I have ever seen. The band is also set to play Coachella in April.

Diplo’s crazy side project, Major Lazer released yet another crazy video. Based off of the viral Jian Sword Dancing, it features a woman swinging a sword around, a creepy guy with a butterfly knife, an old lady, and a cute little doggie that nearly gets sliced in half around the 2:16 mark. Everything seems to work here…the song, the dog, and the awesome old lady! It’s nothing short of awesome!

Stanley From “The Office” Has a New Single and Music Video!

File this under “who knew?”. Leslie David Baker aka Stanley Hudson from The Office (and one of the funniest characters on that show) has a very, very, very auto-tuned song called “2 Be Simple”. In the video, he pretty much just hangs out in his jammies and bathrobe playing “Black Hugh Hefner”, along with some hot chicks. There are several pop culture references, including Jack Sparrow and dick in a box!

Hanson to make an IPA beer called MMMHop

I wouldn’t normally post about Hanson, and as much as I’m embarrassed to admit it, I did see them play a free show in Providence a few years ago, but when I’m not drinking hard liquor, I like beer. A lot of people like beer and Hanson seems to like beer too (yes…they are all now of legal drinking age). The trio plans to make an India Pale Ale style beer available in early 2012, with the very original and not surprising name of MMMHop. I see what they did with the name there!

Is this the start of a new band trend for 2011-2012? First the Dogfish Head (who make great beers by the way) made Pearl Jam Faithfull Ale, which I might track down this weekend, and now Hanson? What’s next? Adele Pale Ale? Bei-beer???

They Might Be Giants – Electronic Istanbul (Not Constantinople)

They Might Be Giants have a cool new synthed out version of their classic “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)“, called “Electronic Istanbul (Not Constantinople), which you can hear in the new John Flansburgh directed video above. The track comes off of their recently released “Album Raises New And Troubling Questions” album, which is full of rarities. The album also contains their pretty cool cover of Chumbawumba’s “Tubthumping“, which was done for the very excellent The Onion’s AV Club Undercover series.

The Stone Roses to Headline Festivals in Scotland, Spain, and Japan!

Having recently broken the record for the fastest selling concerts ever for their 3 day Heaton Park shows, the reunited Stone Roses have announced a few festival dates in Scotland, Spain, and Japan. The exact days the band is playing has not been announced yet. Since I can’t afford to trek to these festivals, I’m still hoping for some U.S. shows to be announced…but when Stone Roses, when???

New Washed Out Song – “Call It Off”!

Washed Out has released an awesome new track (which was also a bonus track on the iTunes version of “Within and Without“), titled “Call It Off“. The song will be part of the “Amor Fati” 12 inch single, which is due out on November 7. This has become one of my favorite new songs. It’s a perfect song for a post clubbing, late night chillout mix (and yes, that’s a very good thing!).

The Stone Roses Have Reunited, Tour Planned for 2012!

In what is definitely one of the biggest music related stories of 2011, the Stone Roses held a press conference today to announce that they are reuniting for 2 shows and a world tour in 2012. This will be the first time in 15 years that original band members, singer Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, bassist Mani, and drummer Reni, will all play together. It was also announced that the Stone Roses are currently working on new music and to expect new songs on this tour.

The first two shows will take place at Manchester’s Heaton Park on Friday, June 29th and Saturday the 30th. Tickets go on sale at 9:30am (UK time) this Friday, October 21 and can be ordered from the following:

And to anyone who is able to get tickets and is going to these first two shows, yeah, I’m jealous, but hopefully they make it over here to the U.S. although a trip to England is in order for 2012 though!

2011 – The Year of Really Bad Collaborations

2011 is shaping up to be the year of really bad collaborations. First, there is the Jack White/Insane Clown Posse song “Leck Mich Im Arsch“, which is absolutely terrible.

Then we get the the Lou Reed and Metallica collaboration, “The View“, which is far worse than anyone could have imagined.

And let’s not forget that Korn is teaming up with Skrillex. This is a trend that needs to stop!
