Earlier today, the lineup for the 2011 Coachella festival, which takes place in Indio, California on April 15th – 17th was finally announced after this big hoax made the rounds on the internets. With the exception of the awful and overplayed Kings of Leon, this is a pretty good festival lineup, although it seems oddly familiar. Besides KoL, other headliners for Coachella this year The Chemical Brothers, Bright Eyes, Duran Duran, PJ Harvey, and Kanye West. There seems to be a couple of reunions happening as well, including Death From Above 1979 and the London Suede.

Friday, in my opinion has the best lineup of the weekend, followed closely by Sunday’s bands. The Saturday lineup is easily the weakest, and not because of my well known dislike of Mumford and Sons and The Arcade Fire. It’s just that there are really no stand out bands playing that day that you couldn’t see in a more intimate venue, which would probably be a much better experience.

Some of the non-headling bands not to miss:

Friday: Warpaint, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Tame Imapala, A-Trak, and !!!
Saturday: Gogol Bordello, Foals, Cults, YACHT, Gayngs, Mariachi El Bronx
Sunday: Lighting Bolt, Best Coast, Health, CSS, Delorean, Angus and Julia Stone, Yelle

Unfortunately I can’t make it this year (a prior commitment in New Orleans makes this trip near impossible), but going by the chance conversation about festivals that I had with my local Seattle’s Best barista (who has gone for the last 4 years), it’s a very fun experience. Watch out Coachella 2012!
