Levitation 2019 1st Wave Lineup Announced

LEVITATION-2019-Phase-One-lineup

My absolute favorite festival, Levitation fka Austin Psych Fest (I know, I know, I just can’t let go of the old name. It makes explaining it to coworkers a lot easier) dropped their lineup for 2019. Honestly, I hate the current format of various shows happening at different clubs instead of being at one spot at Carson Creek Ranch, which was actually really fun and super convenient.

Either way, the lineup actually kicks some serious ass with acts such as Kikagaku Moyo, Holy Wave, Deafheaven, Black Mountain, Russian Circles, Death Valley Girls, The Black Angels, Chelsea Wolfe, Allah Lahs, Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr., Black Mother Super Rainbow, and A Place To Bury Strangers amongst a whole bunch of other amazing bands. I’m giving some serious thought to going because I really miss Austin and Levitation.

Tickets for Levitation 2019 are on sale now at various price points for individual shows, or $395 for a 4 day pass that gets you into select venues, or $175 for shows only at Stubbs.

Ride Release New Song “Future Love” and Announce New Album “This Is Not a Safe Place”

That Youtube link up there? Yeah, that’s a brand spanking new Ride song called “Future Love” from their new album This Is Not a Safe Place, which comes out on 8/16/19! Full of layered guitar and harmonized vocals, I’m really liking this first single. Even though I couldn’t get into their last album, 2017’s Weather Diaries, Ride have always been one of my favorite bands…like, ever! I can’t wait to hear the whole album!

This Is Not a Safe Place can be ordered through Wichita Recordings.

The 2019 Lollapalooza lineup is out!

Lollapalooza-2019-poster

The 2019 Lollapalooza lineup came out today and I kind of like it, but then again, Lollapalooza weekend is one of my favorite things despite the lineup because there is always someone to see or something to do. The festival is an almost overwhelming 4 days again an some stand outs for me are Ariana Grande (probably the only way I’d ever see her live), Childish Gambino, Tenacious D, and the pretty cool Tame Impala.

As for the undercard, some interesting bands are Mitski, Slash, San Holo, Japanese Breakfast, Diesel…which is Shaquille O’Neal doing a DJ set, the very fun Boy Pablo, Men I Trust, Shaed, and lots more to be discovered! After skipping the last couple of years, I’m really missing the whole Lolla weekend experience including the fun, free after parties as well as Chicago in general (I could seriously write a ton of things that are great about this weekend…the music, the food, the beer, etc). As of right now, I don’t think it’s possible, but who knows?

Lollapalooza takes place at Grant Park in downtown Chicago from 8/1-8/4 and 4 day passes are currently on sale here.

The Woodstock 50 lineup is here!

woodstock50 poster

The much hyped Woodstock 50 lineup is finally out and overall, it’s not too bad. There are actually a few bands that I would love to see including Miley Cyrus (yes, really!), Santana, Portugal the Man, Soccer Mommy, Jay Z, Courtney Barnett, Earl Sweatshirt, Cherry Glazerr, and The Zombies, who absolutely killed it when I saw them at Austin Psych Fest in 2014!! But uhh…eff Imagine Dragons and their giant drum.

I’m really giving some serious thought to going, but it’s suddenly becoming tough to decide on which festivals to go to this year.

Woodstock 50 takes place at Watkins Glen, NY on August 16, 17, and 18th. Tickets go on sale on 4/22/19.

Review: Sir Babygirl, Sunspeaker at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth, NH 3-06-2019

I left work a little early in order to take a nap and get ready for the 45 minutes or so drive to Portsmouth for the first show of this Sir Babygirl/Sunspeaker mini tour. I luckily hit no traffic on the way and found a free parking spot right across the street from 3S Artspace. I always say it everytime I go there, but they have the nicest, friendliest staff of any venue. Sunspeaker were already playing to a very small crowd when I got there.

Sunspeaker

I didn’t know much about Brooklyn’s Sunspeaker, as there isn’t much information out there about them. They played dreamy synth pop that even included some crazy flute playing that got everyone dancing. This was a really fun set and I can’t wait to hear more!

Sir Babygirl

From the moment Kelsie Hogue aka Sir Babygirl, took to the stage with only a guitar, laptop, and a whole buttload of 90’s pop song loops that included Ashlee Simpson and Norah Jones, it was obvious that this was going to be a fun set! Playing mostly songs from her latest album Crush on Me, the small crowd was really into it. People were dancing nonstop and Hogue seemed to have fun bantering with the audience, at one point, even goofing on her tour manager.

At one point, she did a really good cover of Jojo’sToo Little Too Late“, which got huge cheers. I ended the night at Gilley’s for a hot dog and poutine, which was much needed and definitely hit the spot. This was a really fun, danceable, and very intimate show (there really should have been a much larger crowd). Sunspeaker was a great opener and Sir Babygirl killed her set! I’d recommend seeing either of these bands if you get the chance.

Sir Babygirl’s latest album, Crush on Me is out now on Father/Daughter Records and on Bandcamp.

Music Monday: HOLYGRAM – “Modern Cults”

Holygram - Modern Cults (cover)

I’m bringing back Music Monday (and releasing this week’s version a little early).

This week’s Music Monday is 50 minutes of atmospheric dark wave sounds from HOLYGRAM, who formed in 2015 in Cologne, Germany. Starting out with an intro appropriately named “Into The Void” that goes straight into “Modern Cults”, the tone for the rest of the album is set (and that setting is dark and synthesized).

My favorite song on the album is the 4th track, “Signals”, which has a little bit of a straightforward gothic sound to it.

Going into the 5th song, “Dead Channel Skies”, it breaks down just after the halfway point into a cool calmness before things get chaotic again towards the end.

Each track blends into one another without you even realizing it, which creates a pretty seamless listening experience. If you like bands like The Soft Moon and The Jesus and Mary Chain, then you’re going to like HOLYGRAM a lot.

Modern Cults can be downloaded from the band’s Bandcamp page and for those who like vinyl, it is available through Cleopatra Records.

If you’re in the Boston area, HOLYGRAM are opening for VNV Nation at Royale tonight.

HOLYGRAM 2018 Tour Dates:

Nov 25 – Royale, Boston, MA
Nov 27 – Théâtre Corona, Montreal, QC
Nov 28 – Danforth Music Hall, Toronto, ON
Nov 30 -St. Andrew’s Hall, Detroit, MI
Dec 01 – Metro, Chicago, IL
Dec 02 – Skyway Theatre, Minneapolis, MN
