Music Monday: HOLYGRAM – “Modern Cults”

Holygram - Modern Cults (cover)

I’m bringing back Music Monday (and releasing this week’s version a little early).

This week’s Music Monday is 50 minutes of atmospheric dark wave sounds from HOLYGRAM, who formed in 2015 in Cologne, Germany. Starting out with an intro appropriately named “Into The Void” that goes straight into “Modern Cults”, the tone for the rest of the album is set (and that setting is dark and synthesized).

My favorite song on the album is the 4th track, “Signals”, which has a little bit of a straightforward gothic sound to it.

Going into the 5th song, “Dead Channel Skies”, it breaks down just after the halfway point into a cool calmness before things get chaotic again towards the end.

Each track blends into one another without you even realizing it, which creates a pretty seamless listening experience. If you like bands like The Soft Moon and The Jesus and Mary Chain, then you’re going to like HOLYGRAM a lot.

Modern Cults can be downloaded from the band’s Bandcamp page and for those who like vinyl, it is available through Cleopatra Records.

If you’re in the Boston area, HOLYGRAM are opening for VNV Nation at Royale tonight.

Music Monday: New Aura – “New Aura”

I’m keeping it local for this week’s Music Monday with Boston band New Aura. I heard about New Aura completely by accident from a Facebook post about an upcoming show, and being curious when such things happen, I gave them a listen and loved what I heard.

Evoking feelings of listening to 60’s psychedelia while sitting on a California beach, opener “Deja Vu” is my favorite song on this album with its psych guitars and hazy vocals, almost bordering on surf rock. Towards the end, you have “Cut Tooth” and finishing with the instrumental “Mantra”, which has a slight Dick Dale-like sound to it. I was left wanting to hear more. Luckily, they recently released another EP called Aura Mismo. So, head over to their Bandcamp page and check it out!

Music Monday: Toba Caldera – “Demo #1”

Toba Caldera are a 5 piece from Barnsley, England who make a pretty good mix of psychedelic and rock music. Demo #1 starts out with “The Three Of Me“, which hits you immediately with a wall of sound. My favorite track on this album is the third song, “In My Room“, which is also the most psychedelic sounding song on this EP. Ending with “Desolation“, it builds up slowly with chant-like vocals for a couple of minutes, peaking with a wild guitar and drum freakout, then slows back down at the end. This is a pretty good EP and I’d recommend giving it a listen (or free download) over at Bandcamp.

Music Monday: ABADABAD – “The Wild EP”

ABADABAD are based out of Allston, Massachusetts and have a summery, lo-fi sound with some reverb thrown in for good measure. “The Wild EP” features 7 songs that seem to have a running theme of lost loves. Some of the standout tracks are “All The Bros Say” and “White Lies“, both featuring a stomping beat, while the opening song “Babe Mountain” has more of a dream-like sound to it. This is definitely an album worth checking out, so head on over to their Bandcamp page and grab the free download of “The Wild EP“.

Also, check out this video for one of my favorite songs on this album, “Park Slope (I’m Sorry)“:

Music Monday: Catching Flies – “The Stars EP”

Catching Flies is a 21 year old producer from London, but I can’t seem to find any more information than that about him. His 4 song “The Stars” EP is a downtempo, electronic album that has a warmness to it. Starting off with atmospheric and very good “Sunrays“, the album has a nice, mellow flow throughout all 4 songs.

The standout is the title track “The Stars“, which does a very good job of sampling Coldplay’s “Yellow“, but does it subtly in the background, with a mildly jazzy kind of sound. I highly recommend heading over to Catching Flies’ Bandcamp page and downloading this free EP. I can’t wait to hear more from him in the future!

Music Monday: Pony Trash – “Pony Trash”

10 seconds into the opening track, “Submarine” on Pony Trash‘s self titled EP, I was hooked. Slow strummed, almost twangy guitars, and dreamy vocals, this song became my favorite out of the five on this EP. It’s the kind of song that you never want to end. Things pick up a bit in the next track, “Down to the River”, then even out for the rest of the album, which has a shoegaze/dreampop influence throughout.

Based in Minneapolis, Pony Trash is made up of members from The Chambermaids, Polica (who also blew me away during a Lollapalooza after party), Vampire Hands and Gospel Gossip. I could easily leave this whole album on repeat and not get sick of it. Pony Trash is definitely one of my favorite albums of the year and I’m hoping a tour comes soon!

Music Monday: Spies on Bikes – “Man Overboard”

I don’t know if I just happened to come across this album while in the right state of mind or what, but I’m really liking Spies on BikesMan Overboard” a lot. A project of Tampa’s Nathan Cochran, Man Overboard is kind of an abstract album that uses various voice samples, squawking seagulls, and airport announcements, which gives it more of an organic sound.

On the opening track, “Leaving“, there are voices that go from an innocent sounding “can you hear me?” into some kind of argument, although it’s mostly done behind the music. “Sun Showers” is perfectly titled as it conjures up the image of gently falling rain, thunder, and children playing. The 7 1/2 minute “Deep Search“, which is my favorite on this album, starts out with the calming sound of birds and ocean waves, eventually building up to a drum beat and guitars, before calming back down again.

This album is best listened to through a really good set of headphones, where you’ll end up picking out some new sounds every time. Man Overboard is available as a name your own price download on Bandcamp and definitely worth checking out.
