Music Monday: HOLYGRAM – “Modern Cults”

Holygram - Modern Cults (cover)

I’m bringing back Music Monday (and releasing this week’s version a little early).

This week’s Music Monday is 50 minutes of atmospheric dark wave sounds from HOLYGRAM, who formed in 2015 in Cologne, Germany. Starting out with an intro appropriately named “Into The Void” that goes straight into “Modern Cults”, the tone for the rest of the album is set (and that setting is dark and synthesized).

My favorite song on the album is the 4th track, “Signals”, which has a little bit of a straightforward gothic sound to it.

Going into the 5th song, “Dead Channel Skies”, it breaks down just after the halfway point into a cool calmness before things get chaotic again towards the end.

Each track blends into one another without you even realizing it, which creates a pretty seamless listening experience. If you like bands like The Soft Moon and The Jesus and Mary Chain, then you’re going to like HOLYGRAM a lot.

Modern Cults can be downloaded from the band’s Bandcamp page and for those who like vinyl, it is available through Cleopatra Records.

If you’re in the Boston area, HOLYGRAM are opening for VNV Nation at Royale tonight.

Music Monday: The Kolour Kult – The Kolour Kult EP

The Kolour Kult is a duo from Providence, Rhode Island, a city known more for it’s noise and hardcore scene than synth-pop music. The opening line of the very Pet Shop Boys-esque first track, “Sentimentality Fails” proclaims “I may seem too sentimental, but I’ve grown fond of you“, which is exactly how I feel about that decade.

They have taken an 80’s style and given it an update while staying true to the original sound. The fourth song, “Window” which is my favorite, starts out with a drum beat that sounds like the it came straight from Love and Rockets’ “So Alive“, with an oddly familiar “whoa-oh-oh” chorus that will stick in your head. So, go ahead and grab the free 5 song EP from their Bandcamp!

They are playing at AS220 in Providence this Friday (7/20/12) with Math the Band and Streight Angular. I’m going to try to make it down there, since this should be a pretty good show.

Music Monday: Cheerleader – “Cheerleader”

This week’s Music Monday (I know, I’m off by a day) is the Hartford, Connecticut based duo of Donovan Rex and Max Friday, also known as Cheerleader. With a pretty catchy guitar hook and chorus, the first track, “New Daze” has a familiar sound, almost like it could have been a new wave/alt song straight out of the 80’s. It kind of reminds me a bit of New Order. The second track, “Dreamer” is pretty catchy as well.

Although there are only two songs on their Bandcamp page (and a third on their Soundcloud page), I’m really looking forward to hearing more from these guys. If they every make it up to Boston to play a show or two, I’ll definitely be there!
