Review: King Buffalo, Sundrifter, Lucid Lynx at the Middle East Cambridge, MA 4-26-19

Lucid Lynx - Sundrifter - King Buffalo Sign

I ventured out on this extremely stormy night to the Middle East Upstairs for a pretty cool psych/metal show. Driving to Alewife was pretty treacherous due to the heavy rain, but I actually got there quicker than expected. Caught the red line to Central Square and was at the Middle East before I knew it. Lucid Lynx were already on stage playing to a very packed room. It has been a while since I’ve been to a show at the Middle East Upstairs and I had forgotten how small that room gets when it’s filled.

Playing to a nearly full room, Boston’s own Lucid Lynx were holding the crowd’s attention with their awesome psych rock sounds. I have seen these guys a few times now and they never disappoint. This was a great way to start the night.

I was listening to Sundrifter, who are also from Boston, earlier in the day at work and became instantly hooked (including getting a coworker into them), so I was really looking forward to seeing them live. With heavy guitars and lots of reverby vocals by singer Craig Paura, this was a perfect sound to cause some in the audience to start a mosh pit in the middle of the room, while others that were fortunate enough to be blessed with long hair, started head banging. This was a great set and Sundrifter has easily become or of my new favorite local bands.

I wasn’t all that familiar with King Buffalo who are from Rochester, NY, but I was excited to see them after giving their latest album Longing To Be The Mountain a listen. Playing what can only be described as atmospheric psychedelic rock, which at times, exploded with heavy guitar riffs, they had the still packed room slowly nodding their heads in time to the music.

I haven’t been to a show with this much psych goodness in a while, and I was overdue. This was a really amazing night of music and all three bands were great! I ended the night with a very delicious chicken shawarma at Aleppo Palace before hopping the T back to Alewife and heading home.
